Monica is beleive to be the first highway of tears victum from Terrace/Thornhill BC
Monica Ignas, 15, of Thornhill, just west of Terrace, went missing Dec. 13, 1974. Her partially nude body was found in a gravel pit on April 6, 1975, about six kilometres from Terrace. She had been strangled.
One area resident, Janet Hultkrans, recalls that Ignas used to hitchhike from Terrace to her home just past Thornhill, on the outskirts of town.
"Maybe she was the first [to disappear]," she says. "She wasn't much older than my kids and I had picked her up once and driven her to school, so she is forever in my memory. She was a nice girl and doesn't deserve to be forgotten."
in school i use to think she was so smart because she read alot of books, man that girl loved to read.
and to me any way she always seemed to be a happy kind of person. we hung out a bit, if my memory has me right, i even think she was into sports in school . she was very active type . then they moved to terrace one day i dont remember how long after they moved, but one day she decided to come to visit me while i was living in Broman lake doing a baby sitting job. i remember giving her shit for hitch hiking all the way there from terrace, but you know it didnt seem to bother her . she was just happy that she made it to where i was . and you know what i think i was more scared for her then she was . so she had her visit she didnt stay long at all like half hour and left , but made it home that day . and it was like she had no fear just doing something she felt like i guess i dont know what made her hitch hike i know she didnt do it very long before her death .it was so sad and scarey . doesnt her family still live in terrace ?? im sure they could tell more of a story . i havent heard of any of them since they moved . i also went to school with her brother steven . i know they still own their old house here . and no one ever lived in it since everyone here says its haunted they had people rent it and they all moved out with in a short time like month or two. all i know was monica really liked it here .and when they moved she started hitching. i dont think she ever did that before or she never mentioned it to me. but then her family was all here .she was what we called the book worm in school . i went to her house afew times once i remember a story we were over there and she took me into her basement she wanted to show me something she was giggling and laughing as we went down in the dark finally we reached a room where she open the door and showed me what was in there when she turned on the lights i freaked cause in that room was hanging some im not sure if it was pigs or cow bodys they were hanging the meat well i ran up stairs screaming she got a real laugh out of that . she d do funny things like that i remember she had some older sisters when i went over but im sorry i can not remember the names they were alot older then us. any ways if i think of any thing else i will let you know . this was such a surprise you writing me and asking me this i hope i helped you in some kind of way. good luck and im pround of what your doing no one else seemed to be doing anything . keep it up ..
